Releases & Fix Versions

Create versions, assign tasks to them, track release scope.

Versions (Fix Version) let you plan which work ships in which release. Each board keeps its own version list, opened from the Releases view in the "More" menu of the board top bar.

  • Create a version: a name, an optional description, start and release dates and a status. There are three statuses: Unreleased, Released, Archived. "Publish" and "Unpublish" on the row switch the status in one click
  • Assign tasks to one or more versions: Fix Version holds the releases a fix ships in, Affects Version the releases a bug hits. Both are multi-select, because a bug can affect several releases and a fix can go out in several
  • Filter by version. See the release scope instantly. Filtering, export, bulk edit and CSV import all handle the multi-value version fields
  • Each version row counts the tasks that have it as Fix Version: how many there are, how many are in the "Done" category and the percentage complete. Expanding the row lists the tasks with their statuses, and clicking one opens it
  • The list sorts newest first, oldest first, by name or by release date. The release report downloads with "Export report" as Excel, CSV or PDF: version, status, dates, work items, done and progress
  • The new task screen does not ask for Fix Version, since that is not known when work is opened. Version lists sort newest first and gain a search box when they grow long. A required version field stays visible even when the board has no versions and says one must be defined
  • Collect release notes in the docs space

Marking a version “released” does not close open work tied to it; it only reports scope. To move open items to the next version, filter the Fix Version column of the list view by that version from its header, select the tasks and, under More > Fix version in the bulk actions, give the new version with "Replace"; pick "Add" if the old version should stay on the tasks as well. Creating, editing and deleting versions needs the "Board configuration" permission, and setting a version on a task needs "Edit system fields". A deleted version is removed from its tasks too, and versions are not copied when a board is set up from another one.
